Heritage Community Credit Union

History in the Making

In 1953, the roots of Heritage Community Credit Union were planted when seven civilians working on Mather Air Force Base recognized a need for better financial service on base. Led by Kay Fischer, each member contributed $5.00 to form what was then called Mather Civilian Credit Union. Meanwhile, in 1955, a military credit union was started to serve the military personnel on base. By August of 1962, the two organizations combined operations to form the financial institution known as Mather Federal Credit Union. Mather Federal has always undertaken an innovative approach to product and service enhancement. In an effort to provide members with alternative investments, the credit union established Mather Financial Services, Inc. - a wholly owned subsidiary of Mather Federal. Other credit union products and services were added throughout the years, including mortgage loans, Priority Line audio response, and our Member Services Department.

In January 1989, the United States Department of Defense announced the 1993 closure of Mather Air Force Base. Mather Federal's management and staff were quick to reassure the members that the credit union would remain open, regardless of the final disposition of the base. As a result of the announced closure of Mather Air Force Base, we began adding local employer groups to our field of membership.

The 1992 addition of our Folsom branch and a successful merger with Electrical Workers #340 Credit Union helped to add more than 1,600 new members to our membership base. Expansion efforts continued with the introduction of our Arden Branch in November 1993. In 1994, Mather Federal officially merged with Proctor Gamble Employees Federal Credit Union - welcoming an additional 1,600 members to the Mather family.

The culmination of these efforts, and our ability to withstand the effects of the closure of Mather Air Force Base, earned Mather Federal the distinction of "Federal Credit Union of the Year" as named by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU). The credit union was also crowned "Business of the Year" by the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce for its outstanding business achievements and community support.

On December 14, 1998, Mather Federal Credit Union members voted overwhelmingly to convert to a state-chartered community credit union. With this conversion, membership eligibility was broadened to include individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in Sacramento County. After careful consideration, the member-elected Board of Directors voted to change the name of Mather Federal Credit Union to Heritage Community Credit Union. This name was chosen for its reference to tradition and strength, and as a tribute to the members who have been instrumental in the credit union's growth and success over the past forty-six years. Effective March 1, 1999, Heritage Community Credit Union completed its conversion and began operating under a state community charter. We look forward to serving both our current and future members with quality products and superior member service.

At Heritage Community Credit Union, our commitment to excellence is embodied in our mission statement:

Investing in member relationships by delivering valued financial solutions.
